Climate

Tanzania is very near the equator and is therfore usually quite warm and pleasant. You will find a more tropical climate on the coast and in the southern game reserve of Selous, while the other Nothern parks of Tarangire, Manyara and Serengeti. Ngorongoro highlands maintain a more temperate climate. These Northern parks dp have mountain inflence, and are sometimes foggy all the day long, but rarely will the temperature fall anywhere near 0 Celcius degrees.


What to bring

It is very important to bring the following once you have decided to visit this part of the world:

Clothing

  • boots
  • rain gear
  • Wind breakers
  • sneakers and sandals
  • Warm jacket(s) and/or sweeter(s) -- for night and when at high elevation
  • gaiters (if hiking)
  • several pair of socks and enough underwear to keep you happy.
  • hat (for sun protection)

  • Camera and plenty of film
  • binoculars
  • plenty of batteries
  • torch/flashlight/headlamp
  • sun glasses
  • sun lotion & lip balm
  • insect repellant

Flights and Airports.

Tanzania has three international airports, Dar es Salaam. Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar.
The flight service is available between these three airports and other cities across the globe from:
KLM-Royal Dutch Airlines- from Amsterdam to Kilimanjaro and Dar es salaam.
British Airways- from London/Heathrow to Dar es Salaam via Nairobi.
Swissair- from Zurich to Dar es Salaam
Gulf Air- Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar via Muscat.


Health

RAT highly reccomends that you visit a travel nurse before traveling to East Africa.
Taking yellow fever vaccination is highly recomended on the mainland Tanzania and compulsory in the Coast and Zanzibar. Malaria tablets should be taken before beach holidays and tours. Personal Health insurance is advised.
